Light Refraction
Basement extension and refurbishment of 2-storey Victorian house
By reworking an existing light well into a 2-storey extension we connected the new basement floor with the living floor through the 2-storey open space, bringing in additional light to the basement family room. By using a composite acrylic and glass honeycomb structure, we managed a better u-value, less slipperiness, more privacy and more light reflection than any glass equivalent.
To disguise the open kitchen from the living room, we designed the kitchen cupboards to blend with the living room storage, using continuous cupboards for storage and bookcases over the fireplace. The undulating pattern of the cupboard doors also assists in reflecting light into the space.
